I tend to be one who hates rearranging the furniture. Once in place I like to keep it that way; that way I can walk through the house in the dark and not have to worry. Some would like life to be that way but it just doesn’t work that way. Change is a constant in our lives.
Not all change is good, but then, who defines what is good. In the movie “Midnight in Paris” the characters struggle between wanting the good old days and dealing with the realities of the present. There is a tendency to dwell in the past and to be afraid of the future.
Finding stability in the sea of change brings strength, confidence and hope. What is stable? I think of the hymn, “on Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand.” Christ is that solid rock but how does that become real in our lives?
Living literally or virtually in Christian community provides a place where the stability of Christ may be found. As a community prays together, washes in the Word together, struggles together, the stability of Christ is present.
Walking with a spiritual director and engages in specific dialog and prayer also provides a place where the stability of Christ might be explored and nurtured.
Change happens, no doubt, but the stability of Christ lets us keep walking with confidence and hope.
